And So It Begins…

FIRST PROJECT AT DJCAD

Today we received our first ever project from Linsey. “To design a small-scale building that reflects a shifting city.” It comes as Dundee is currently reworking its entire waterfront, where buildings are being torn down and the city is being built up again. One of the biggest changes and attractions to the waterfront is the arrival of the new V&A Museum of Design, with its planned opening in Summer 2017.

I was very pleased about the brief as I had written my dissertation last year on the work of Zaha Hadid and Kengo Kuma. Two architects with very different portfolios but of similar ages, both very inspirational. Ofcourse, it was Kuma who designed the competition winning V&A design so I was familiar with the design of it.

However, there were a few constraints placed on us. The structure could have a footprint no bigger than a standard car park space, tying in well with Fridays antics on Park(ing) Day. We also have to consider how we can design our pavilion to emotively express the changes happening to the waterfront. Seeing as this project contributes to our module titled ‘Material Matters’ we had to investigate materials and explore how:

Decay Deconstruction/Reconstruction Mapping/Aerial Views Urban and Industrial Regeneration

can all be incorporated into the design.

I’m looking forward to getting started and finding out a lot more about Dundee as a city, both whats happening now and its history. Because I’m not from Dundee and could count on one hand the amount of times I’ve visited the city, I think this project is a great start to my time at both DJCAD and Dundee.
