Above is the link to our final video summarising our socratic dialogue inspired installation and the different stages of our project. You can also see our final presentation boards, both created by our computer whizz-kid Rachel. She played to her strengths and captured all our hard work to create these busy boards and video.

INTERCONNECTIONS // WEEK FIVE

Well that’s us then! As a team we are amazed how we have came up with this design using socratic dialogue and slow design. Our installation has really came together this week with the addition of our table, texas pathway and our initial four structures.

Taking inspiration from the book ‘Eyes of the Skin’ and our musical team member, Keiran, we have added several pieces that create different sounds. We also played around with projecting colours onto the installation. It created very effective shadows and really shined a new light on our installation – what a finish!

INTERCONNECTIONS // WEEK FOUR

stage-61

This week was quite a downer for our team, we finally heard back from Amsterdam only for them to tell us they were no longer taking part in the project. This meant when we returned this week nothing had been added to our bare installation.

As a team, we bounced back and added diagonal beams to the frame to act as bracing to make the structure stronger. .

We also began experimenting with sound and movement to create some diverse pieces that we can hopefully add to our installation.

After receiving the next move from Texas for the installation we quickly got to work cutting the four pieces and placing our elements on it.

Looking at the final piece, as a team we decided we wanted to add some height to try turn this sculptural piece into more of an installation.

Keiran and I began designing a table to house the design that Texas had created, which proved very difficult without the use of glue or screws!

INTERCONNECTIONS // WEEK TWO

Team photo- fun

This week we have been working on adding height and depth to our structure to keep busy while the other schools work on the instructions that we have sent out.

We began by taking inspiration from artist and sculptor, Sol LeWitt. We used electrical tape for the back drop and contrasting masking tape for the base to create bold connecting lines that project across our stage.

We then applied our four chosen colours to create abstract forms to represent the four elements we built last week.

FINAL STAGE

To further develop our stage we built a large frame around it. We painted these elements with bright colours, emphasising the fun week we have had together.

A quick summary of our week…

We began by researching Socratic Dialogue and Slow Design and took away some key points from various TED talks. We are looking forward to building an installation with other schools and a little apprehensive at the same time!

We are beginning the installation by taking 16 identical pieces and splitting them into four sets. Each set is representative of the four interior-based institutions taking part in the project. We have used a bright colour for each to emphasise the connections that we have created.

We have built these four little mini structures which can be used however the next school sees fit. It is out of our control what Texas decides to do, but we are looking forward to what they come up with!

And so it begins… The final part of the Border Crossings module has begun and I am lucky enough to be a part of a great team. I’m sure we will have great fun while working hard on designing an interactive installation using slow design and socratic dialogue as inspiration!

We are the main focus group for interacting with the other schools in Texas, Slovenia and Amsterdam! I’m looking forward to getting started and seeing what we end up with by the end of the project.
